There's a flower that spills over garden walls and kitchen fences across the hills through the warmer months - nasturtium, all orange and red, climbing wherever it's given the smallest excuse. And nearby, the moringa tree - dropping its small cream flowers and feathery leaves into the same gardens, the same kitchens, season after season, without ever asking to be noticed the way the nasturtium does.
This pair holds them exactly as they grow: side by side.
Nasturtium petals have an unusually open form for a pressed flower, which means they resist flattening and brown at the edges if dried too quickly. Moringa leaves are the opposite problem entirely - the leaflets resist staying together as they attach far delicately on the main stem, turning brittle as they dry age. So the two are pressed on entirely separate timelines, watched closely, and only brought together once each has fully dried in its own time.
From garden to finished earring: the better part of a season.
The hardest part was giving each botanical its own frame, and still making the two feel like they belonged together. Two brass frames were hand-hammered into their own distinct shapes so each botanical could sit in a silhouette that actually suited its form. Inside each, the resin went in layer by layer, cured and checked before the next was added, since the moringa's fine leaflets and the nasturtium's thicker petals hold moisture and light so differently that rushing either would have ruined it. Once each piece had built up enough layers, both were buffed by hand until they were thick and solid enough to wear daily without feeling fragile. What you're looking at now is a matched pair, each one holding its own botanical fully and separately. And if you look closely, the nasturtium flower's veins are still visible, exactly as fine as the day they were picked.
