Lagerstroemia speciosa, also known as Jarul across North and East India, Taman in Maharashtra and Gujarat, Pride of India or Queen's Flower elsewhere. Native to India, it lines riverbanks, forest edges, and city avenues alike, blooming in peak summer and edging into the first weeks of monsoon.
Its petals are thin and crinkled, closer to crepe paper than to leaf, opening a deep mauve on the tree, thin enough that held up to light, each one turns almost translucent, its veins visible right through the surface.
That same delicate texture makes the flower difficult to work with the moment it's picked. The petals tear easily and hold moisture, so they have to be pressed and dried slowly just to survive. Even then, they don't stay as they were.
Over drying and curing, the mauve deepens and browns on its own, which is why some charms hold a petal still close to its original purple, and others hold one that has turned to gold and rust.
Each piece carries the shade and character the flower arrived at in its own time - the veins, the translucence, the fold of a single petal never chosen, never repeated the same way twice.

How to use these charms
Each charm comes with its jump ring already attached i.e. the small metal loop at the top. For most uses, you don't need to open anything.
- As a necklace : simply slide the charm onto a chain or cord through its jump ring.
- On a bracelet : clip the jump ring directly onto a charm bracelet's links, or connect it to a clasp.
- As earrings : pair two matching charms with earring hooks, hooking the jump ring directly onto the hook.
- On a bag or keychain : attach the jump ring straight onto a keyring or lanyard clip.
- As a gift or keepsake : since no two petals are alike, a single charm works well on its own, gifted as a small, complete piece rather than part of a set.
If you ever need to open the jump ring : to link it onto a fixed chain that doesn't have an opening, or to attach a clasp without bending or weakening it:
- Hold the ring with two pairs of pliers (or pliers in one hand, fingers in the other), one on each side of the tiny gap.
- Twist one side toward you and the other away from you, moving the ends sideways, out of the ring's circle not straight apart. Pulling the gap directly apart stretches the ring out of round.
- Slide on whatever you're attaching.
- Reverse the motion to close it, twisting the ends back until they sit flush with no visible gap.
