Wild Himalayan Sunflowers bloom once a year, for 4 to 6 weeks in November, as wild bushes along the riverside in the Himalayan foothills of Dehradun. Unplanted and unfarmed, they grow where they choose.
Miss the window, and you're waiting until next year or the one after to forage. There's no fallback.
Even once you've found them, they don't press easy. The petals curve instead of lying flat, more irregular than store-bought sunflowers, and the pollen centre is wider and thicker too, resisting the flattening that regular petals give up to easily.
They're hand-sculpted, petal by petal, into resin, layer after layer, each one poured, cured for about a week, then hand-buffed before the next goes on. 4+ layers, where most mould set pieces settle for 2 or 3. One slip while buffing and the layer is ruined, so every piece that survives is the one that made it through.
Add it up, and a single pair can take a year to make, sometimes 2 years, depending on when the petals were found and how many layers had to be redone! It can't be rushed and can't be replicated on demand which is why every batch is small, and why there's no version of this you can simply reorder.
What's left is a petal that still holds its wildness: the irregular curve intact, the veins visible in a translucent natural yellow.
What does "hand-sculpted" mean? Made without a mould, using 4 or more hand-poured resin layers instead of the usual 2–3. Each layer cures for about a week and is hand-buffed before the next goes on, with the botanical hand-positioned throughout. Nothing here is templated, and no two pieces come out the same.
